☀️ DCSS to Reopen Tuesday Following Winter Weather Closure
The Douglas County School System and the Douglas County Emergency Management Agency have been closely monitoring weather and road conditions over the past several days. The winter weather event that caused Monday's closure has moved out of our area, and safer road conditions have returned.
As a result, all schools and offices will resume normal operations on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
All regular schedules, including before- and after-school activities, will operate as normal. Our administrators and the district operations department will continue to monitor conditions at all schools and will alert us immediately if conditions change.
We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we prioritized the safety of our students and staff. We look forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow.

❄️ IMPORTANT: Douglas County Schools to Close Monday, January 26, 2026
Due to severe winter weather approaching our area, the Douglas County School System will close all schools on Monday, January 26, 2026. All extracurricular and athletic events are also canceled on Monday. Students will not report to school. Only essential employees should report to their locations.
The decision to close the school district on Monday comes after days of careful consideration of National Weather Service (NWS) reports and guidance from Governor Brian Kemp’s current statewide State of Emergency.
To stay informed of updates, we encourage families to check their email, follow our district Facebook page, check dcssga.org for the latest information, and verify that their contact details are up to date in Infinite Campus.
We will continue to monitor weather conditions throughout the weekend and will communicate any changes through these official notification channels.
Expect another update by 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026, regarding the status of Tuesday, January 27, 2026. At that time, we will announce any additional changes to Tuesday’s schedule, as well as any needed adjustments to after-school activities or athletic events.
Thank you for your continued flexibility and understanding as we prioritize both safety during this severe weather event.

📈 Greatness Is What We Do Next.
When students reflect on their progress and set personal goals, they discover that growth is something they create. Confidence grows when learning comes from within. ✨
💬 Listen to our 4th grade students share how they have seen their own growth this year…
Kendra - "I know I've grown in math because my grades have improved from the beginning of the year. I knew I wanted to get better at fractions and my scores in iReady show that I have!"
Xavier - "I know I've grown in reading because the goals I've set for myself have caused my grades to go up and my iReady scores to soar."
Sarai - "I know I've grown in writing because my teachers have inspired me and let me read more which also inspires my writing. I know I've grown because even a 5th grade teacher has read my writing and told her students to write like me."

🎯 Greatness Is What We Do Next.
By helping students see where they started and how far they’ve come, we empower them to believe in themselves—and to keep striving for what’s next. That mindset fuels lifelong learning. 💙
💬 Our 2nd grade students say it best…
Levi - "I like learning because I can learn cool new things; it's fun to get cool knowledge. I want to keep learning so I can continue to get smarter."
Jacie - "I like learning because it helps my brain grow. I want it to keep growing because it helps me do cool things."
Elena - "I like learning math because it's fun and easy for me. I want to keep learning to help me grow up to be successful!"

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Valentine’s Love of Literacy Night! ❤️📚
We had such a wonderful evening reading books together, making Valentines, creating special bookmarks for family members, and checking out extra books for the break from our library and the Douglas County Public Library Book Mobile!
It was so much fun seeing families reading side by side and capturing sweet memories at our photo station.
Thank you for coming out and showing your Cub that literacy is something to celebrate as a whole family. And a special thank you to our staff who stayed at school to run stations and helped make it such a successful night and Annie from the Douglas County Public Library for bringing the Book Mobile! We are so grateful for our amazing community! 🐾💕

Our 5th graders are sparking new ideas this Black History Month! During STEM, students explored the life and legacy of Lewis Latimer, the brilliant inventor who played a pivotal role in the development of the lightbulb and the electric lamp.
Inspired by Latimer’s contributions to electricity, our young scientists got hands-on by:
🔌 Creating their own functional electric circuits.
🔍 Testing everyday objects to classify them as conductors or insulators.
💡 Discovering exactly what it takes to keep the lights glowing!
It was an "electrifying" way to honor history while building future engineering skills. 🛠️✨

Our 4th-grade scientists have been reaching for the stars! During STEM class this Black History Month, students honored the incredible legacy of Dr. Mae Jemison by taking their engineering skills to the next dimension.
Using Tinkercad, these young innovators designed custom rockets that are now coming to life on our brand-new 3D printer! 🖨️✨
🙌 A Heartfelt Thank You
We want to extend a huge shout-out to the Key family for their generous donation of the 3D printer. This amazing tool will be used during STEM to enhance hands-on learning for all of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students.
We are so grateful for your support in helping our students’ ideas take flight! 🚀💡

During STEM, our students dived into the incredible legacy of Alexander Miles to celebrate Black History Month. After learning how his invention of automatic elevator doors changed the world, our young engineers took the lead!
Using a mix of LEGOs and VEX kits, they designed and built their own elevator prototypes with custom door mechanisms. Honestly? Some of these unique designs are so clever, we might see them in modern buildings one day! 🏢✨
