Mrs. Sweeney's class is learning all about food chains in reading! This week they read “Who Eats What?” and created their own edible food chains using gummy worms, goldfish, and teddy grahams. 🐻🐠🪱 Of course, they were at the top of the food chain—because they got to eat them all! 😋

📚 Our 5th graders had an amazing opportunity to join a virtual author study led by Kwame Alexander! Kwame is an award-winning author and poet who writes books that make reading and writing fun and powerful—you might know him from The Crossover and Booked!

He kicked things off by reading a short excerpt from one of his books and then taught a mini lesson on list poetry. Then, he was joined by Erin Entrada Kelly, another incredible author who writes stories about friendship, courage, and finding your voice—like in her book Hello, Universe! She shared about her new book and led us in a writing lesson on developing characters.

Our students asked thoughtful questions, wrote creative poems, and learned from two masters of their craft. ✍️✨ We'll have the opportunity to join the other three sessions throughout the year when other amazing authors join Kwame to continue to inspire our students.

A huge thank-you to the wonderful family friends of our Media Specialist who made this experience possible through their generous donation. Your support helps our students continue to grow and love writing! ❤️

🎒 Check your student’s backpack for their fundraising packet! (by the end of the week)
🎁 Shop from hundreds of fun items – and support our school in the process!

🎲 Mr. Marshman's Class had a blast practicing addition with three addends today! They used doubles facts to help solve their equations in a fun, hands-on activity. Each student rolled six dice, looked for two of the same numbers to create a doubles fact, and then added one more number to make a three-addend equation. Using their tens frames, they solved their doubles and found the total — all while strengthening their number sense and problem-solving skills! 💪✨

📖 Today our 3rd graders visited the Etowah Indian Mounds, a Georgia State Historical Site in Cartersville, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Southeast. Students explored the mounds and reviewed the ways Native American cultures of the Mississippian period lived, worked, and thrived. It was a meaningful day connecting classroom learning with real history! 🚌🏞️

Our school garden is getting ready for winter! 🥬

We're so proud of our student helpers: Mrs. Martin's class got their hands dirty planting some fresh kale, and Mrs. Sweeney's 1st graders did a fantastic job watering the new additions!

A huge thank you to Ryan Bragg and the Alexander High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) Club for donating the kale plants and sharing their excellent gardening advice!

We're hoping our chickens and rabbits are excited for a delicious, healthy winter snack! 😋
